There are over 145,000 eligible AAPI voters in Ohio but only 49% of Asian American voters, and only 41% Chinese American voters turned out to vote in 2016, compared with 64% of white Americans. It is very important to encourage all AAPI voters in Ohio to turn out to vote to make our community’s voice heard.

Voter Resources:
1. How do I know if I’m registered to vote or not?
Check your voter registration status on the Ohio Secretary of State voter registration website.
2. ID Requirements (Ohio Secretary of State website)
3. How do I fill out the ballot?
Instructions for marking and casting your ballot are posted in each polling place. If you have any questions about how to mark or cast your ballot, or if you have incorrectly marked a ballot, immediately contact a precinct election official for instructions before you continue.
3.1 Sample Ballot
Do some research about your ballot before you go to the early voting or polling location. You can look up the sample ballot specific to you – based on where you live, the list of candidates may vary for local offices (presidential and statewide candidates are the same for everyone.)
Click the following links provided by the Ohio Secretary of State to view your sample ballot by county. Your county site will ask you to enter your address to view your precinct and sample ballot information:
3.2 Candidate Background
The Columbus Dispatch 2020 Voter Guide allows you to look at your sample ballot, and also provide background information of each candidate.
On www.vote411.org (maintained by League of Women Voters), you can:
- Look up sample ballot by address and party
- Read about candidate background
- Watch videos of the candidate forums they held (you can view the videos of the 2020 Ohio AAPI Community candidate forums here)
4. Vote by Mail (Absentee Voting)
4.1 When can I request absentee voting?
The deadline to request an absentee ballot was noon on October 31. It is no longer available if you have not requested.
4.2 When should I return the vote by mail ballot?
Depends on how you want to return it:
- Return your absentee ballot by mail:
It must be postmarked no later than November 2, the day before Election Day, and received by your county board of elections no later than November 13, 10 days after the election.
Only the date marked on the postage label purchased at a USPS customer service window or vending machine is counted as a postmark. You should not use a postage meter or an online service (such as stamps.com) to affix postage.
The U.S. Postal Service (USPS) estimates that it may take two to five days for your voted absentee ballot to be delivered to your board of elections by mail.
- Return your absentee ballot in person:
You can do it by yourself or have a near relative deliver it for you to your county’s the board of elections no later than 7:30 p.m. on Election Day.
4.3 What if I change my mind and want to vote in person instead?
If you do not vote your absentee ballot and instead decide to go to your assigned polling place on Election Day, you must vote a provisional ballot. You should bring your absentee ballot with you and turn it in to the election official.
4.4 How can I track my vote by mail ballot?
You can track your ballot at: https://voteohio.gov/track.
Watch the Ohio Secretary of State’s video about how the mail ballot works from end to end: Sec LaRose: The Life of an Absentee Ballot.
4.5 More questions about absentee voting?
Go to the Secretary of State’s website: https://www.ohiosos.gov/elections/voters/absentee-voting/.
5. Safety precaution:
All voters will be encouraged to wear a mask, just as the vast majority of Ohioans do at the grocery store or a restaurant
6. Is there any assistance provided for people with disabilities?
A voter with a physical or mental disability, or a voter who is unable to read or write, may be assisted by anyone of the voter’s choice, except a candidate who appears on the ballot in that precinct, the voter’s employer or the employer’s agent, or an officer or agent of the voter’s union. A voter may also be assisted by two poll workers (each of a different political party). No one who assists a voter may disclose any information about how that person voted. For more information about access for voters with disabilities, please click here.
